In February I attended the Justin & Mary Lighting Intensive Workshop. Now that I have had time to fully reflect on the experience, I want to share it with you!
Last December, on one of Mary’s Instagram posts I remember commenting Virginia as a location suggestion for their next workshop. Well, guess what! Their next workshop location was in Virginia just an hour away from me! It wasn’t just any workshop. The workshop’s focus was flash. Flash is a word that made me want to crawl into a hole. I didn’t go to photography school. In fact (I can’t believe I’m admitting this), I’ve never taken a single photography class! I’m 100% self-taught. Teaching yourself flash is incredibly daunting, and anyone who has done it, I commend you! So, when it came to this topic, I was always weak. Justin and Mary said something that will always stick with me. “Show me the situation where the photographer intended to go all natural light, and we’ll show you the situation where it went wrong! ”
I knew I couldn’t stay in the dark (get it..?) forever. I knew how amazing the opportunity was, and did not pass it up. It was time for me to master flash! Fast forward to February.
On the day of the workshop, I was truly humbled. Can you imagine asking some of your biggest role models some of the most basic questions? It wasn’t easy. But, I learned SO much that day. They taught us how to control and manipulate light. They started with a foundation, and built from that all day long. At the end of the day, I found myself desiring situations where I could use my flash! The best part is that all of the things they taught us that day (AND MORE) are part of a 12-week course which I am still making my way through as I prepare for wedding season!
This is changing my photography game in a big way and I am so glad I will be able to provide my clients with a higher quality service! Below are some of the images I captured day. We didn’t start shooting until evening, so the light you are seeing in these photos is completely artificial!
