My 2020 Word of the Year

FILED IN:

Personal

Yes, I realize we are almost halfway through the year.  So, maybe it seems a little late to be sharing my word of the year.  But, I’ve felt empowered by the focus and inspiration my word of the year has given me in 2020, despite the major curveball (pandemic) we’ve all been thrown.  So, I want to share, in case you could use a little inspiration right now!

I use the Cultivate What Matters Powersheets to help plan out my life, basically.  Powersheets is an intentional goal planner.  It has a crazy amount of prep work and introspection that you do before you actually set any goals.  We are talking over thirty pages of work before you get to the regular “planner” material.  Part of setting your big annual goals is creating a word of the year.

So, back in December 2019 I considered where I was and where I wanted to be in 2020.

Here are some words I considered using as my Word of the Year:

  • connect
  • content
  • grateful
  • thrive
  • focus
  • consistency
  • diligence

It came down to three words for me:

  • connect- join together; be united
  • thrive- to grow vigorously; flourish
  • create-to produce or bring about by a course of action or behavior; to produce through imaginative skill

In the end, I chose create as my word of the year!  For me, create can mean so much.

Creating is about more than making art, or the act of being creative.  It’s also about creating a life and legacy you can be proud of.  I do a lot of creating when it comes to photography, but I also do a lot of creating when it comes to the small decisions I make every single day about who I want to be, and how I want to show up in the world.

For me, it’s important to remember that being creative doesn’t always look like a piece of artwork or some elaborate project.  It can be creating a meal, a cozy home, or a colorful garden (yeah, still working on that one).  It can be creating meaningful interactions with the people I’m close with.  It’s about ultimately creating a life I’m proud of little by little.

So, that’s why I chose the word create.  And, I’m sharing it now, nearly six months later, because it has helped me survive this bizarre time by just keeping one word at the forefront of my mind.  Even if I can’t accomplish my other goals, photograph weddings they way I did last year, or hug all my friends, I can focus on this one word!  What’s a word you could focus on to help you show up better everyday?

Do you have a word of the year?  It’s not too late to come up with one!  Here is an entire list of words to consider!  Of course, Google has plenty of suggestions, too!

And, here are some of my favorites:

  • grace
  • present
  • rest
  • simplify
  • trust
  • worthy
  • listen
  • joy
  • persevere
  • move
  • reflect
  • today
