Consider Cake Placement On Your Wedding Day | Louisville Kentucky Wedding Photographer

Planning

This blog post is going to seem so random and short, but I’ve never talked about it before.  I’ve been updating my portfolio for next year, and have noticed a trend.  Brides will spend good money on their cake, only to have it placed in a spot that isn’t well-lit, and has a messy background.

I loved the placement of Molly & David’s cake in front of this beautiful mural!

I work with clients who value simple, classic wedding design.  I often achieve that look by finding simple and clean backgrounds.  I can tell my couples where to stand and move them around for the best shot.  But, I can’t do that with a cake.

The cake tasting was one of my favorite parts of the wedding planner process.  We LOVED our cake.  It was so delicious, the flavors were perfect, and I know it was made with love.  Merts Cakes did a fantastic job.  My mother-in-law wrapped the top layer perfectly, and it tasted just as delicious on our year anniversary.  It was so special to us.  I know several couples share this sentiment.

But, often times when I photograph cakes at wedding, they aren’t placed in a spot conducive to clean, naturally-lit photos.  I know this post can seem nit-picky, but by simply being aware the you should place your cake in a well-lit spot you can avoid this mistake so you have a beautiful lasting image of something that doesn’t last very long at all!

When you are deciding where to place your cake, here’s what I suggest:

  • Naturally lit space
  • Clean background
  • Cake is turned properly so that the flowers and decor look the most beautiful from the angle the photograph will be shot!
