This blog post is going to seem so random and short, but I’ve never talked about it before. I’ve been updating my portfolio for next year, and have noticed a trend. Brides will spend good money on their cake, only to have it placed in a spot that isn’t well-lit, and has a messy background.
I loved the placement of Molly & David’s cake in front of this beautiful mural!
I work with clients who value simple, classic wedding design. I often achieve that look by finding simple and clean backgrounds. I can tell my couples where to stand and move them around for the best shot. But, I can’t do that with a cake.
The cake tasting was one of my favorite parts of the wedding planner process. We LOVED our cake. It was so delicious, the flavors were perfect, and I know it was made with love. Merts Cakes did a fantastic job. My mother-in-law wrapped the top layer perfectly, and it tasted just as delicious on our year anniversary. It was so special to us. I know several couples share this sentiment.
But, often times when I photograph cakes at wedding, they aren’t placed in a spot conducive to clean, naturally-lit photos. I know this post can seem nit-picky, but by simply being aware the you should place your cake in a well-lit spot you can avoid this mistake so you have a beautiful lasting image of something that doesn’t last very long at all!
